It's well known that Jesus and the religious establishment did not see eye to eye. The Pharisees were meant to attend to the spiritual needs of the Jewish Nation, but had become so embroiled in keeping tradition, that their spiritual duties fell to the wayside. They were living by the words of God, but they were not abiding in the Word of God. Jesus' actions in ministering to the socially and physically ostracized allowed for the restoration of many people's faith. This counter-cultural movement hit the Pharisees doubly, as it convicted them of their negligence, and threatened "their way" of doing things. Jesus didn't mince words with them either. Indeed he says to them point-blank, "You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." (Matthew 12:34) Indeed, The Pharisees were filled to the brim with venom that sought to silence their own Messiah.
